About Constantine
Constantine is a very picturesque city. Perched on a rock separated by the profound goges of the river Rhummel, it is famous by its five brides that link the two banks of the river.
The site of Constantine is one of the oldest human settlement in the Mediterranean. Anciently Cirta, is rose to history during the 4th century BC as the capital of the Numidian Kingdom and later as capital of the roman province of Numidia. In the 4th centry AD is became Constantine as a tribute to the Roman emperor Constantine I. From the 11th century it was the siege of the hafside governorate whose capital was Tunis, and then became capital of the eastern province of the Algiers Regence. It beheld heroically a first siege by the French army and then fell in the second siege of 1836 after a fierce battle. It is now a city of more than 1 million habitants with three universities.
